About Us

Does Charlottesville want to be Aspen or Austin?

Dear visitor!

A year or so ago the local tech council, now known as CBIC started a series of presentation talking about the future of Charlottesville. Do we want to become the domain of only the ultra wealthy, like Aspen? Or become a thriving small city like Austin with good jobs, vibrant community life, and many opportunties?

At last year's beCamp one of the sessions that had the most involvement and discussion was the lunch time session Future of C'ville Tech Community. Clearly people are interested in fostering a strong tech community. However, what I've found is that we are all in our own little communities... There are University folks, Library Folks, Java Techies, .NET Techies, Web Designers, Video/Multimedia folks, Linux/Systems people, Government IT contractors... And because of this, we miss out a lot on the cross pollination of ideas that you get when you spend time with folks dissimilar to yourself.

So my contribution is this site that attempts to aggregate data together from various locations to present a single holistic view of the High Tech community. It's a site that pulls in publicly accessible information from the internet into one place, and attempts to find the small communities of interest that exist.

It's not meant to be a gold mine for recruiters or spammers, but instead a tool for us, the Tech Community, to use to find out what events are going on, who we might want to collaborate with, and to demonstrate the strength of the Charlottesville Tech Community.

It's very much a work in progress... I've been learning a lot about data aggregation and web 2.0 mashups, so I expect you'll find some warts and holes in the site. But I welcome any feedback you might have!

Cheers,

Eric Pugh

  • Is my email safe from spammers? Yes it is, it is obfuscated on the web page, and only displays in browsers with JavaScript, not spam bots.

Where the data is from

All the information on this site comes from public websites. If it's on this site, then it's information about you that is available on the internet! I am trying to only import information that would be related to High Tech in Charlottesville, versus a general social networking site like Facebook or MySpace. For this reason I don't check for data on those sites, but I do check for data on LinkedIn.
